Get a load of this.
  • What's this?
A game engine built specifically for 3D platformers. Designed to make it easy as possible to create levels where you run around jumping on stuff

  • Is it actually named "Workshop Engine"?
Internally we're calling it "NewEngine", but here on Workshop you can call it "Workshop Engine" or "NewEngine"

  • What compatibility will this engine have with SRB2 addons?
It can load the DooM map format, with support for FOFs, slopes, and moving platforms.

*some* SRB2 content will be playable out of the box, but it's not a replacement for SRB2.

  • Which versions of SRB2 does it support?
It supports levels from SRB2 1094, 2.0, and some 2.1 content.

  • Why is the engine published on this site?
The modding community of SRB2/Doom is really cool, and since NewEngine has support for DooM level imports, people may find NewEngine to be a cool modern take on old school style game modding.

  • Is it possible to create another game (not Sonic) using this engine?
Yes.

  • Is it possible to create a commercial game using this engine?
You could, but not recommended since the engine is in early stages.

  • Is the engine open source?
The source code is incomplete and the engine is still a work in progress. Internally all its source code is MIT licensed.

  • What language is the source code written in?
C++ and OpenGL

  • Does the engine support sprites?
Yes

  • Does the engine run on old computers?
Yes, it can run on Windows XP, and has playable frame-rate even for computers that are 10 years old.

  • Is it possible to create a 2D game using this engine?
No. But you could create a 2.5D game easily; Like a Sonic Mania using 2D sprites in a 3D world.

  • Is this engine based on Unity, Unreal Engine or Godot?
No, it's all original

  • Do you want to create a real SRB3?
This project has no official relation to SRB2 or new-STJR. You could consider it a spiritual successor, based on childhood dreams of "what if things moved to a modern engine".

  • Which level editor can be used for the new engine?
NewEngine has a built-in level editor to create levels. This is the main editor.

For people who wish to use DooM level editors, you could totally create new content using your old DooM tools.

  • Will you be showing the engine at SAGE?

Maybe, the engine has no set release date. We plan to test things first with an alpha release version 0.1.

  • When will the Engine be ready?

We wish to create a finished engine and an original game campaign. We plan to have early releases of the Engine for modders to play with. And then eventually release the original game campaign after.

From what I've heard from you, this project could have a great future

Aw yeah! Can't wait to make "jump and press the circle button"!

Holy crap!

Will this feature a 360 degree physics engine?

It’s been a while. Is there anything new going on with this engine?

Will this feature a 360 degree physics engine?
Yup. The engine & landscape are designed for Up and down and all around.

This type of spiral landscape was made in the engine's editor. So as you create levels, you can directly run on any slope or curved geometry.
