is Sonic Robo Blast 2 not upgrading to a new engine?

lets talk about it, you may think a engine upgrade is useless , because the game still works. but I think they have to move on, i think the sonic fangame scene is bloated with 2d pixel sprites. will we never have a actually good 3d classic sonic game? the ironic part. the game is actually not 3d. its 2.5d, I mean the srb2 team took the C code of a 1993 game made for shooters. and tried to tinker with it to make it sonic. guess what? it took them until 2019 to actually get a massive difference. let me show you
here's srb2 from 2006 (aka the 1.09.4):

1792949575483

and here's srb2 from 2016 (aka 2.1 which released in 2014):
1792949653465

10 years, no difference, and the difference is a lazy ui change...

took them nearly 20 years to overhaul the game in 2019 ??

and even for mod devs. its not sunshine and rainbows.

you have to draw 8 seperate art for a single frame. this hurts.

but that is because srb2 is just 2d faked in 3d.

seriously when could they move to a new engine????

Well, I don't really see a better engine to move to. The game is fine in the engine it's currently in, (in my opinion.) Unless they go to unity but I'm pretty sure it's way more complicated. And going to a different engine would also destroy the entire modding scene as they would have to fix their mods to fit with unity's code. Yes while the game would improve going to unity they also have to do think about their community. The reason sonic re-rush was able to move into another engine was because nobody was editing the game or anything. I may just be rambling because I know nothing about unity. (and don't plan to)

And to quote the srb2 wiki "
SRB2, v2.1 brought significant changes to the game in many areas. Among the most notable changes and additions are the following:

  • The Single Player campaign was heavily updated to improve its consistency and quality, adding or replacing several stages while significantly editing others.
  • New Special Stages based on the SEGA game NiGHTS Into Dreams were added to the game.
  • Time Attack mode was expanded into Record Attack mode, and the emblem system was revamped.
  • To further increase customizability, SOC received extensive changes and Lua was added as a second, more versatile scripting language.

Their codebase is made in C. Lua is made to be easily embed in C. that should not take a whopping 10 years to implement. that could take just a day,

and the single player campaign "barely" improved

"New special stages wow my mind is blown" special stages are called special for a reason

nobody gave a shit about time attack mode

Risk it for the biscuit. it is better for a game to be better and lose the mods. so people can make mods easier. seriously bro, its 2026 and srb2 still refuses to grow up and either migrate to a new engine or make their own.

Well I've heard they have their own version of lua called Blua which is lua but drastically different. But I guess you do have a point. (Maybe, I might need to check with ty.) also I just provided those changes because 2.1 was way more than just a hud change.
(Also I like the time attack mode grr...)

I think they just don't want to and they see no reason to because nobody has really complained about the engine. Anyways I don't even use base srb2, I use reveries.
