Discord is a really broken communication platform

Discord acts like it owns you. At random, it'll ask for your personal information and it just acts like an exploitative platform.

I know a lot of you use discord, and it hasn't given you any trouble so far, but discord adds too many layers of confusion.

Literally texting people in a chatroom should not require 3 layers of verification.

If anyone of you remember IRC, it was a lot easier to talk online there. No verification hoops to jump through. No holding your account hostage.

If you google search "Discord won't let me verify", you can find that even Discord's *PAYING* customers get locked out of their own account:


^ No one should have to deal with that nonsense. Discord wants your email and phone... and then Discord will *still* complain at random.

- It's forced privacy invasion

- They ask you to verify and prove that you're human, but that's still not enough

- This is unnecessary complication.

And why do they *need* your phone? Why isn't email and verification enough for them, Discord seems really suspicious, like Discord is trying to sell your phone number or exploit innocent people.

You should be able to just *talk* without the gestapo suddenly locking you out.

It's absolutely ridiculous that Discord turned into a Dictator that asks everyone to "show your papers" at random.

We've already seen that discord is very hostile to new users and locks people out without warning. You shouldn't have to give up your phone and email just to use a chatroom.

So going forward, we want to create a community where people can talk freely and they don't need to log in or anything.

So, newengine will be using IRC, which is a classic chatroom system.

Let people just talk and that's it.

Discord keeps locking everyone out for no reason. It's bad and unfriendly to new users:

And even after you verify, and even after you give Discord your phone and email, it still locks you out.

Even if you pay discord, they will accept payment but then still lock you out. It's bad.

We don't want new users to go through that, so we want to make a free and anonymous chat system for people to talk about WorkshopEngine.

So people can just have fun

I don't really think it's that broken, the whole "verification" and the "3 layers of verification" stuff was made for security reasons, the privacy invasion stuff is basically what every single big company or corporation do.

"Everyone's doing it", doesn't make it ok. Just like slavery wasn't ok in the 1800s even though every big company was doing it.

There's a point where companies could invade privacy so much it turns into digital slavery. Where you can't do anything unless you give Discord full access to monitor you like it owns you.

(There's a book called "1984", it describes big corporations(Big Brother), and people being controlled by screens - them having no more privacy - Big Brother is really similar to Discord and the screens are a lot like modern Smartphones - the book was written WAAAY before the modern internet existed, and it speaks of the same problems of network privacy).

I know privacy invasion might not seem like a big deal now, but think about where "verify" this is headed

"Privacy invasion" of today, could turn into full digital enslavement in a decade.

Major evil doesn't happen all at once, it's a slow process until things become obviously bad.

There's a history of countries that turn evil and enslave people through corporations and surveillance. I'm saying big tech companies like Discord could create a techno dictatorship with how much they want invade privacy.

To spy on your conversations and push you to do things until you have no privacy... what do you think Discord is going to be like 10 years from now?


Discord could turn into something evil that always wants to spy on you, like in the book 1984.
